Cyber Crime Attack - Israeli hackers release Arab credit card details

Cyber attacks between Israeli and Arab hackers was raised yesterday, as a shadowy Israeli group released the details of 4,800 Arab credit-card holders and tried to launch attacks on the websites of the UAE Central Bank and the Arab Bank Palestine.

Early yesterday, hackers who said they were Israeli posted the credit card numbers, security codes and expiration dates of the cards, which they said they obtained from the website of a major Saudi bank. The Central Bank said the website did become inaccessible for about 20 minutes but the problem had been quickly solved.

The Arab Bank website remained inaccessible for most of the day when accessed in Abu Dhabi."They did target the website, but they didn't do any damage," said Bob Thomson, chief manager of information technology projects at the Central Bank, who described the incident as "a concentrated attack".

The hackers' email message to The National linked to an online warning calling on "terrorists to stop their terrorist acts against Israel and attempts to disrupt the normal course of life in Israel".

Five tourists dead in Ethiopia terrorist attack

Gunmen in Ethiopia's north attacked a group of European tourists traveling in one of the world's lowest and hottest regions, killing five, wounding two and kidnapping two, an Ethiopian official said Wednesday.

Ethiopia called the attack "an act of open terrorism" and said the gunmen came from neighboring Eritrea and attacked the tourist group before morning on Tuesday. Three Ethiopians were also taken hostage. Eritrea denied it was involved.

Ethiopian Communications Minister Bereket Simon said,”Austrian, Belgian, German, Hungarian and Italian nationals were among those in the tourist group”. Two Germans, two Hungarians and an Austrian were among the five killed, according to an Interpol report cited by the spokesman for Hungary's prime minister. Two Belgians were seriously hurt and two Italians escaped unharmed, the report said. Two Germans were kidnapped.

Austria's foreign ministry confirmed that an Austrian man from the province of Upper Austria was among the five dead. Germany's foreign minister also confirmed two German deaths, news agency dapd reported.

Those wounded in the attack arrived in Addis Ababa Wednesday evening, where they were met by embassy personnel. A British diplomat at the airport said it was possible one British tourist was among the group attacked.

Video reports of al-Shabaab battles with Somali forces feature jihadist with London tone of voice. An aggressive Islamist group in Somalia that has declared its allegiance to al-Qa'ida is using a young British man to file video propaganda from the front lines of the country's civil war to try to draw English-speaking Muslims to the Horn of Africa for jihad, The Independent can reveal.

The man, who stays behind the mask throughout his videos, speaks in fluent English with a clear London accent and presents breathless reports of battles that the militant groups have fought against Somali government and foreign forces.

Intelligence sources and terrorism experts believe the man was either born in Britain or spent considerable time here and that he may have even had some media training before heading abroad to join the militant network..

The Independent has collected at least three videos in which the man features. The first – which runs for 11 minutes and is titled "African Crusaders" – was released in June 2010 and only contains the man's voice. A second 21 minute long video – "Mogadishu – the Crusader's Graveyard" – was released a month later and shows the young reporter appearing with his face covered in front of burning tank that he claims was destroyed by Islamist fighters.

Two Swedish reporters were sentenced to 11 years of prison for supporting terrorism. A court in Ethiopia on Tuesday sentenced two Swedish journalists to 11 years in prison on charges of supporting terrorism after the two illegally entered the country with an ethnic Somali rebel group in a case that has been criticized by media rights groups.

Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye were the two Swedish journalists who supported terrorism. Judge Shemsu Sirgaga ruled that the two freelance journalists — Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye — will serve “rigorous imprisonment” following their convictions last week.

Ethiopian troops had captured Persson and Schibbye six months ago during a clash with rebels in eastern Ethiopia’s restive Somali region, a no-go area for reporters. Ethiopia considers the rebel group a terrorist organization, and it is very difficult for journalists to gain access to the region. Rights groups say that is so abuses there are not exposed.

The international community has closely followed the terror trial against the Swedes. Rights groups and diplomats say Ethiopia’s anti-terrorism proclamation restricts freedom of expression and is used as a tool to crack down on dissent.

IAF choppers to provide live demonstration of terror hit

Planning to offer a real-time picture on ground during terrorist attacks to security forces, the Indian Air Force has arranged two of its Mi-17 helicopters in Mumbai and Delhi. These helicopters have been equipped with imaging systems and sensors to allow live video footage of terror attacks to the command and control centers, IAF officials said.

As per IAF's plans, the footage will be used to give a holistic picture to the troops and security forces on ground who can then take synergized action against terrorists, the officials said. The plan to deploy these choppers was initiated in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, they said. India has taken several measures after the attacks to protect vital installations and points against any hit from the sea or aerial route.

The Air Force is also planning to deploy its frontline fighter aircraft such as the SU-30MKI in the National Capital region (NCR) to ward off any possible aerial threat.

During the Commonwealth Games last year, the IAF had deployed its unmanned aerial vehicles to provide security cover to the mega event. IAF has also procured the C-130J Special Operations aircraft which can be used to airlift and deploy quick reaction teams at any location in the country in case of any such attack.

Jose Pimentel, 27, is being held without bail on state terrorism charges after his arrest on Saturday.Jose Pimentel is a Manhattan man who was arrested on Nov. 20, 2011 on charges of plotting to build and detonate bombs in New York.

Mr. Pimentel, a Dominican-born Muslim convert who is also known as Muhammad Yusuf, was said to have been fascinated by the American-born Muslim militant Anwar al-Awlaki. Officials said that Mr. Pimental began plotting a bomb attack in August 2011. But it was the death of Mr. Awlaki, who was killed in a drone strike in Yemen in September, that refocused his efforts, they said.

He had been under police surveillance for more than two years and was arrested after he had come close to completing at least three bombs. Police say he plotted, as an al-Qaeda sympathizer, to use explosives to attack post offices, police buildings and US military-service members.

Pimentel's defense lawyer, Joseph Zablocki, said that Pimentel, who had a minor criminal record for credit card theft wasn't a serious threat.
While the police department kept the FBI informed of the case, a person familiar with the investigation said federal officials were unsure about how much of a threat Pimentel posed and how large a role the informant played in moving him to act.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said that Mr. Pimentel was not part of a conspiracy, had no known contacts abroad and, in the mayor’s words, “appears to be a total lone wolf.”

POPE Benedict XVI has condemned religiously-motivated terrorism at a meeting with 300 leaders of world religions in Assisi aimed at repudiating violence in the name of God.

POPE Benedict XVI said, “We know that terrorism is often religiously motivated and that the specifically religious character of the attacks is proposed as a justification for the reckless cruelty that considers itself entitled to discard the rules of morality for the sake of the intended 'good'.

"This is not the true nature of religion. It is the antithesis of religion and contributes to its destruction," he added during the day of inter religious council held in St Francis of Assisi's birthplace in northern Italy yesterday.

More than 50 Islamic representatives were attending the talks as well as Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, a Zoroastrian, a Bahai and representatives of Taoism, Confucianism and traditional religions from Africa and America.

The pontiff admitted that Christians were guilty of having used violence in the name of God in the past.

"It is true, in the course of history; force has also been used in the name of the Christian faith. We acknowledge it with great shame. But it is absolutely clear that this was an abuse of the Christian faith," he said.

He also called on all those present to "try to identify the new faces of violence and discord more closely."

The event marks the 25th anniversary of the first interreligious meeting in Assisi, organised by John Paul II in 1986, and is intended to be a "journey of reflection, dialogue and prayer for peace and justice in the world". For the first time, four atheists will also attend the meeting, which is being criticized by Catholic fundamentalists who are strongly against the idea of dialogue with other religions.

Iran's supreme leader warns US over assassination allegations

On Sunday 16th Oct Iran's supreme leader warned the United States for any measures taken against Tehran over an alleged plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington would draw out a "resolute" response.

Two men, including a member of the Iranian special foreign actions unit known as the Quds Force, have been charged in New York federal court with plot to kill the Saudi diplomat, Adel Al-Jubeir. U.S. officials have said no one was ever in any immediate danger from the plot.

The Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated that, “if U.S. officials have some delusions, (they must) know that any unsuitable act, whether political or security, will meet a resolute response from the Iranian nation". Iran also demanded that a diplomat be allowed to visit one of the men in prison. Khamenei's comments may reflect Iranian concerns that Washington would use the Al-Jubeir case to ratchet up sanctions and recruit international allies to try to further isolate Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has been blunt in saying the United States would use the allegations as leverage with other countries that have been reluctant to apply cruel sanctions or penalties against Iran.
"By attributing an absurd and meaningless accusation to a few Iranians, they tried ... to show that Iran is a supporter of terrorism. ... This conspiracy didn't work and won't work," he said. Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for his part, dismissed the U.S. accusations as a fabricated "scenario." Iranian lawmakers and analysts have said Iran would not benefit from killing the Saudi ambassador in Washington, even if it might have sought to punish its Saudi rivals for intervening in Bahrain to crush a Shiite-led uprising there. Recently a video was released of Osama Bin Laden in which it shows Osama Bin Laden watching his own picture on the television. The video released neither had date nor time it was taken. It shows a white beard man watching of Osama’s capture on a television. But the man in this video is white beard whereas Osama Bin Laden had only few grey hairs not fully white beard. Not only that, the place captured in that video does not show high economic status of that man. Is it possible a man in the most wanted list with lots of money in his hands live a simple life like that? It is said that Osama had some health issue which needs attention but the man in that video has no facility for that.

Is that Osama really watching that video or are they mistaking some other man for Osama? Some substantial proof should be provided to confirm Osama’s death until then rumors like this will go on constantly.

Seven men arrested for helping Taliban

Thirty seven were killed in a suicide attack at an army recruitment centre in Northern Afghanistan on March 14, 2011. In less than a month, this was considered the third major assault in that area, the deputy governor said. Zabihullah Mujahid (Taliban spokesman) declared that he was responsible for the attack supporting the militant Islamist group.
According to the officials many were wounded. After the attack, Reuters said that they heard gunfire in the area but Hamdullah Danishi, the deputy governor of Kunduz province, denied it. He said that the causalities were due to a single suicide bomber. Danishi told Reuters "The death toll includes new recruits, army soldiers and civilians.” Thirty three bodies were brought in the Kunduz provincial hospital as specified by a doctor. Kunduz area has become a main base for rebellions for the past years.

Two Men from New Jersey found Guilty for attempting to Join Al Qaeda Group

On Thursday (03/03/2011), Mohamed Mahmood Alessa and Carlos Eduardo Almonte entered into a packaged plea deal in a Newark federal courtroom.
They confessed that they plotted to slay, wound and abduct persons outside the United States in order to join al-Shabab, a designated terrorist organization. Alessa is a 21 year old North Bergen who was born in the United States and his father is a Palestinian immigrant. Almonte is a 24 year old, from Elmwood Park, is a citizen who was born in the Dominican Republic. But the Almonte and Alessa are muslims. The charges might hold a life in prison, however under the terms of the plea agreement, they may they may face 15 to 30 years at their June sentencing.
U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement "Through covert recordings and their admissions today, Alessa's and Almonte's own words confirm they took steps down a deadly path," Thursday. He also said “The defendants planned and trained for a mission that began in their New Jersey neighborhoods and would end with the murder of innocent civilians."

This New Jersey case is one of the first to tie both Anwar al-Awlaki, an American cleric and Al Qaeda operative in Yemen, and Omar Hammami, an American-born member of al-Shabab, to a single plot. Prosecutors claim that Alessa and Almonte were motivated while listening to videos from both Awlaki and al-Shabab.
The case is also another instance of a new generation of digital Islamic wars, who take their motivation from the web and do not have direct private contact with Islamic activist.

For the past few days, Britain, the US and other western countries are warned to travel to Yemen, as there is a civil unrest and danger of terrorist attacks. After a month of protests demanding President Ali Abdullah Salih to resign, opposition coalition known as the Joint Meeting Parties put forward a five-point plan last week asking him to step out at the end of this year. But Salih ignored that and claims that terrorists are taking advantage of the political unrest to carry out further attacks against the Yemeni government. Local sources suggest that the alleged al-Qaida militants were most likely just rowdy locals.

Last Thursday Hilary Clinton suggested that Iran was "very much involved" in Yemen's protest movement. As the Al Qaida threat is still on, it is safe for the western countries to leave Yemen. Considering that the British diplomatic and security presence in Yemen is only marginally active, one has to wonder where they are getting their information about AQAP activity from. In the meantime, the opposition JMP has a real opportunity to make a bid for power. Yemen’s ruling party is just trying to convince people that there won't be a revolution, by saying that their country is unlike Egypt and Tunisia. But anyhow one significant difference is the marginal political freedom that is tolerated under the Salih regime. The political unfriendliness is organised and coordinating with protesters. JMP leaders such as famous tribal sheikh Hamid al-Ahmar are doing everything in their power to bring demonstrators all over Yemen under the JMP umbrella. According to al-Ahmar, the only way to preserve unity is to make their party's candidate for president someone from the country's south, where secessionist sentiments are strong. Al-Ahmar in an interview said that he would personally vote for Yaseen Saeed No'man, secretary-general of the Yemeni Socialist party and a native southerner.

Arid Uka was arrested, who apparently took out a pistol and shot dead two American soldiers at Frankfurt airport. Arid Uka was a young man aged 21who had an aversion towards American militants. Why is this aversion? Uka told police he was motivated by a video he saw on the internet that allegedly depicted US soldiers attacking an Afghan village and raping a girl. Many active militants were radicalized after watching similar images from other conflicts on video. Internet allows greater accessibility to these videos but many of these videos are fabricated.

In this case, Uka holds Serbian and Montenegrin nationalities, but grew up and was educated in Frankfurt. The numbers of people like Uka in Europe is from different nationalities but are “European Muslims”. This “European Muslims” sometimes become a threat. In recent years, series of attacks and explosions have been the work of loners. Arid Uka was amateurish and his weapon jammed otherwise he would have killed more. The amateurism has been a feature of attacks for some time. Uka was opportunistic and Al-Qaida has always been able to turn the strengths of opponents into opportunities. Arid Uka, a free spirit in the global structure of modern militancy, acted in a destructive manner. "He said he had decided to perform this act when a chance came along," Peter Brustmann, a senior Frankfurt police detective told reporters. "That was why he carried his weaponry with him." The freer the spirit, the more destructive their behavior.

A federal court has ruled that a Kuwaiti-born man may collect monetary damages from the city of Honolulu following claims that he was arrested based on unjustified suspicions of terrorism.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco refused to reconsider the case last week and ordered the U.S. District Court in Honolulu to determine the amount of damages that the city owes Mansour Arekat. A three-judge panel had ruled 2-1 in November that Arekat's civil rights were violated.

Arekat, 45, was arrested in 2003 without a warrant under a state mental health law allowing people to be taken into custody if they're deemed to be imminently dangerous, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Monday.

Over 90 killed in Pakistan terror bombings, plane crash

3 charged in US with aiding Somali terror group

In an indictment returned Oct. 21 and unsealed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, prosecutors charged St. Louis taxi driver Mohamud Abdi Yusuf, a Somali national who immigrated to the U.S. as a refugee, with one count of conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and three counts of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization - the radical Islamist group al-Shabab.

The government contends that Yusuf and Abdi Mahdi Hussein sent money through a Minneapolis wire-transfer business where Hussein worked to al-Shabab supporters in Somalia between 2008 and at least July 2009. In the second edition of "Inspire", readers are told how to use a four-by-four truck as a battering ram in crowded areas.

The article, entitled "The Ultimate Mowing Machine", continues: "If you have access to firearms, carry them with you so that you may use them to finish off your work if your vehicle gets grounded during the attack." It also warned that jihadists must be prepared to die.

Bomb in Algeria kills 5

Five people were killed Tuesday when a remote control bomb exploded on a construction site in Algeria, a security official in the North African nation said.

The bomb appeared to target public works officials who were inspecting the construction site of new homes in Tlidjen, near the country's eastern border with Tunisia, the security official said. Those killed were three local public works officials and two entrepreneurs.There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Most attacks in Algeria are claimed by al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa, a local Islamic insurgency movement that joined Osama bin Laden's terrorist network in 2006.

Military-grade explosives first found more than a year ago at NYC cemetery cause bomb scare

A caretaker doing gardening work at a historic cemetery dug up a plastic garbage bag containing military-grade explosives last year and left it at the site, where it remained until a volunteer told authorities about it Monday, setting off a big police response.

The employee found the C-4 in May or June 2009 after digging down about a foot into the ground at New York City Marble Cemetery on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said. It contained eight bricks of the explosive, which Kelly said couldn't have gone off because there were nothing to detonate it. The spot was near a tombstone but not in a grave.

It was unclear how long the bag had been at the cemetery, but "we believe it's been there for a significant period of time," Kelly said. He said it appeared to be military-grade explosive similar to the material used in the 2005 London transit bombings but that there were no suspicions of terrorism in connection to the discovery.

The Islamic militant whose disclosures under U.S. interrogation in Afghanistan triggered Europe's terror alert is an old friend of a man convicted in the 9/11 attacks and, as the strikes were being planned, frequented the same mosque where the Hamburg-based plotters often met, officials say.

Hamburg security officials in August shuttered the Taiba mosque, known until two years ago as al-Quds, because of fears it was becoming a magnet for homegrown extremists who, unlike foreigners, could not be expelled from the country.

Ahmad Wali Siddiqui, a 36-year-old German of Afghan descent arrested by the U.S. military in July in Afghanistan has emerged as the latest link between Germany and al-Qaida's worldwide terror campaign. Siddiqui is believed to have been part of the Hamburg militant scene that also included key 9/11 plotters. Intelligence officials say he was a friend of Mounir el Motassadeq, who was convicted by a German court in 2006 of being an accessory to the murder of the 246 passengers and crew on the four jetliners used in the 2001 terrorist attacks, and also frequented the al-Quds mosque.

Pakistan probes video of apparent army executions

Pakistan's army chief ordered an inquiry Friday into video clips that show men in soldiers' uniforms gunning down a group of bound and blindfolded detainees. The footage has raised concern over possible extrajudicial killings by a military that receives billions in U.S. aid.

The two clips were apparently shot by cell phones and have been circulating on the Internet. The footage is grainy and shows no time stamps, and part of the army inquiry's mission is to determine whether those shown in uniform were actually soldiers, Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's statement said.

France Warns Of High Terror Risk In Britain

France's Foreign Ministry is warning French travelers of a high terrorism risk in Britain, asking them to be watchful in public transport and busy tourist areas across the English Channel. Sailors injured in USS Cole attack file lawsuit

Sailors suffering from injuries incurred 10 years ago in the USS Cole attack are suing Sudan for damages.The suit was filed in Washington on Monday on behalf of eight sailors aboard the destroyer and two of their spouses.
